Groove binding
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005033
A mode of non-covalent interaction where a molecule, such as a drug or protein, binds within the major or minor grooves of a double-stranded nucleic acid. This interaction is mediated by hydrogen bonds, van der Waals forces, and hydrophobic interactions between the binding molecule and the exposed edges of the base pairs. Groove binding is distinct from intercalation, where a molecule inserts between base pairs.
