Grimm-type cathode

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005032

A flat sample surface that serves as the cathode in a Grimm-type glow discharge source, where a tubular hollow anode sits a fraction of a millimetre from the sample so the discharge is confined to a well-defined spot. Argon ions sputter atoms from the sample into the plasma, where they are excited for optical emission or ionized for mass spectrometry. The geometry accepts only flat samples and is called an obstructed discharge.
