Endosome

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003902

A membrane-bound compartment within eukaryotic cells, formed by the invagination and pinching off of the plasma membrane during endocytosis. Endosomes are involved in sorting and transporting internalized material, which can then be recycled to the cell surface, degraded in lysosomes, or transported to other organelles. They mature from early to late stages.
