Endorphin
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003901
Any of a group of endogenous opioid peptides produced by the central nervous system and the pituitary gland. These neuropeptides function as neurotransmitters and neuromodulators, binding to opiate receptors to inhibit the transmission of pain signals and produce feelings of euphoria. The term is a contraction of "endogenous morphine," reflecting their morphine-like analgesic effects.
