Endoplasmic reticulum

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003900

A network of interconnected membranous tubules and sacs (cisternae) within the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell. It is continuous with the outer nuclear membrane and exists in two forms: rough endoplasmic reticulum, studded with ribosomes for protein synthesis, and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, involved in lipid synthesis and detoxification. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum contains enzymes, such as cytochrome P450 oxidases, that metabolize xenobiotics.
