Chromatolysis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002048
A pathological process involving the dissolution and dispersion of Nissl bodies (rough endoplasmic reticulum and ribosomes) within the cytoplasm of a neuron. This change typically occurs in response to axonal injury or certain neurodegenerative diseases. Chromatolysis is a reversible process that reflects an increased metabolic demand for protein synthesis during neuronal repair.
