Nissl body
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007948
A large granular structure found in the cytoplasm of neurons, composed of rough endoplasmic reticulum and free ribosomes. These bodies are the primary sites of protein synthesis within the neuron, producing proteins and neurotransmitters necessary for nerve function and maintenance. The dispersion or disappearance of Nissl bodies, a process called chromatolysis, is an indicator of neuronal injury or cell death.
