Neuron
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007883
A fundamental cell type of the nervous system responsible for transmitting electrical and chemical signals throughout the body. These cells possess a cell body, dendrites for receiving signals, and an axon for transmitting them to other neurons or effector cells. Neurons communicate at specialized junctions called synapses, forming complex networks that underlie all nervous system functions.
