Axonal degeneration

The pathological breakdown and deterioration of the axon, the long projection of a neuron that transmits electrical signals. This process can be triggered by injury, disease, or exposure to neurotoxic substances, leading to impaired nerve function. It is a common feature in many neurological disorders and peripheral neuropathies.
