Retrograde axonal transport
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010302
The movement of molecules and organelles within a neuron's axon from the axon terminal back toward the cell body. This process returns old cellular components for degradation and recycling and transports signaling molecules from the synapse to the nucleus. Certain neurotoxins and viruses, such as tetanus toxin and the herpes simplex virus, exploit this pathway to travel from the periphery to the central nervous system.
