Reactive gliosis
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009978
A complex process involving the proliferation, hypertrophy, and functional changes of glial cells, primarily astrocytes and microglia, in response to central nervous system injury, infection, or disease. This response aims to protect and repair damaged tissue, but can also contribute to scar formation and inhibit axonal regeneration. It is characterized by increased expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in astrocytes.
