Microglial cell

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007332

A type of glial cell that functions as the primary resident immune cell of the central nervous system. Derived from myeloid progenitors, these cells constantly survey the brain and spinal cord for pathogens, damaged neurons, and other signs of injury. In response to inflammation or injury, microglia become activated, changing their morphology and releasing signaling molecules like cytokines and chemokines.
