Astrocytic scar

A dense barrier formed by reactive astrocytes at the site of central nervous system injury, such as stroke or trauma. While initially protective, isolating the damaged area, this scar tissue can also impede axonal regeneration and functional recovery. It is characterized by the proliferation and hypertrophy of astrocytes.
