Reactive astrocyte
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013482
An astrocyte that undergoes morphological, molecular, and functional changes in response to central nervous system injury or disease. These cells exhibit hypertrophy, increased expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and altered secretory profiles. Reactive astrocytes contribute to both neuroprotection and neurotoxicity, forming astrocytic scars that can impede axonal regeneration.
