Hypertrophy

An increase in the size of an organ or tissue due to the enlargement of its constituent cells, without an increase in cell number. This cellular adaptation occurs in response to increased workload or hormonal stimulation. Cardiac hypertrophy, for example, involves an increase in the size of heart muscle cells.
