Myometrium

The middle and thickest layer of the uterine wall, located between the inner endometrium and the outer serosal layer, the perimetrium. It is composed mainly of smooth muscle cells, known as uterine myocytes, along with supportive stromal and vascular tissue. During pregnancy, this layer undergoes extensive hypertrophy and hyperplasia to accommodate the growing fetus, and its powerful, coordinated contractions during labor expel the fetus.
