Abortifacient
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012831
A substance that causes the termination of a pregnancy by inducing abortion. These agents work through different mechanisms, such as stimulating uterine contractions or interfering with the hormonal support necessary for pregnancy. Mifepristone (RU-486) is a synthetic steroid that acts as an abortifacient by blocking progesterone receptors, leading to the breakdown of the uterine lining.
