ABO blood group system
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000044
The classification of human blood based on the presence or absence of the A and B antigens on the surface of erythrocytes (red blood cells). An individual's plasma contains antibodies against the antigens that are not present on their own red blood cells. This system determines compatibility for blood transfusions, with type O being the universal donor and type AB being the universal recipient for plasma-free red cells.
