Hemagglutination
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005174
The clumping or aggregation of red blood cells (erythrocytes). This process is induced by specific binding agents, called hemagglutinins, such as antibodies, lectins, or certain viruses that bind to antigens on the surface of the red blood cells. The presence and extent of agglutination form the basis of hemagglutination assays, which are used for blood typing and quantifying virus or antibody concentrations.
