Hemagglutinin

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005175

A glycoprotein found on the surface of certain viruses, particularly influenza viruses, that binds to sialic acid receptors on host cell membranes. This binding initiates the process of viral entry into the cell. It also causes red blood cells to agglutinate, a property used in diagnostic assays.
