Erythrocyte
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004093
A red blood cell, a biconcave disc-shaped cell in the blood of vertebrates that lacks a nucleus and organelles in its mature form. Its primary function is to transport oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues and to carry carbon dioxide as a waste product away from the tissues. These cells contain hemoglobin, which binds oxygen, and typically have a lifespan of about 120 days in humans.
