Hemolysin
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005198
A substance, often a protein or lipid, that causes the lysis of red blood cells by damaging their cell membranes. These agents disrupt the integrity of the erythrocyte membrane, leading to the release of hemoglobin into the surrounding medium. Many pathogenic bacteria produce hemolysins as virulence factors.
