Blood group
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001387
A system for categorizing blood, determined by the specific inherited antigens present on the exterior surface of erythrocytes. These surface molecules can provoke an immune reaction if introduced into a recipient whose own cells lack them, making compatibility testing necessary for transfusions. The ABO system, based on A and B antigens, and the Rh system, based on the D antigen, are the most clinically relevant classifications.
