Blood group antigen

A specific carbohydrate or protein molecule located on the surface of red blood cells that determines an individual's blood type. These antigens are genetically inherited and elicit an immune response if transfused into an incompatible recipient. The ABO and Rh systems are the most well-known blood group antigen systems.
