Spontaneous abortion

The unintended termination of a pregnancy before the fetus has reached a stage of viability, resulting in the death and expulsion of the embryo or fetus. This event is also known as a miscarriage. In humans, viability is generally considered to be after 20 to 24 weeks of gestation, and most spontaneous abortions occur within the first trimester.
