Fetal tolerance
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013099
The immunological state that prevents the maternal immune system from mounting a destructive response against the semi-allogeneic fetus. This complex process involves multiple mechanisms, including the generation of regulatory T cells and the unique expression of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) molecules at the maternal-fetal interface. A breakdown in these tolerance mechanisms is implicated in pregnancy complications like pre-eclampsia and recurrent spontaneous abortion.
