Human leukocyte antigen polymorphism

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005423

The existence of multiple alleles for human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genes within the human population, leading to a wide array of HLA protein combinations on individual cells. This genetic variation results in each person having a unique set of HLA molecules, which influences susceptibility to autoimmune diseases and transplant compatibility. The high degree of polymorphism is a key factor in immune system function.
