Corpus luteum

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002594

A temporary endocrine structure that develops in an ovary from an ovarian follicle after the oocyte has been released during ovulation. It produces hormones, primarily progesterone and some estrogen, which prepare the uterine lining for implantation of a fertilized egg and support the early stages of pregnancy. If fertilization does not occur, the corpus luteum degenerates after approximately 10 to 14 days, leading to menstruation.
