Luteal phase

The latter phase of the menstrual or estrous cycle, beginning after ovulation and ending with the start of menstruation or the next cycle. During this period, the remnant of the ovarian follicle develops into the corpus luteum, which secretes high levels of progesterone. This hormone prepares the uterine lining (endometrium) for the potential implantation of a fertilized embryo.
