Menstrual cycle
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007187
The recurring sequence of hormone-driven changes in the ovaries and uterus that prepares the body for possible pregnancy, in which a follicle matures, an egg is released at ovulation and the endometrium thickens. If fertilization does not occur, the lining is shed as menstrual bleeding lasting usually 3 to 7 days. The cycle averages about 28 days, counted from the first day of one period to the first day of the next.
