Corpus striatum

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002595

A subcortical forebrain structure of the basal ganglia made up of the striatum, which is the caudate nucleus and putamen, together with the globus pallidus. It receives cortical input through the striatum and relays it onward to the thalamus and brainstem, and loss of striatal neurons underlies Huntington's disease while loss of dopamine input to the striatum underlies Parkinson's disease.
