Basal ganglia

A group of interconnected subcortical nuclei located deep within the cerebral hemispheres of the brain. These structures are primarily involved in the control of voluntary motor movements, procedural learning, habit formation, and emotional functions. The main components of the basal ganglia include the striatum (caudate nucleus and putamen), globus pallidus, subthalamic nucleus, and substantia nigra.
