Substantia nigra
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011526
A nucleus in the midbrain, part of the basal ganglia, that has a major role in motor control, reward, and addiction. It is composed of two main parts: the pars compacta, which produces the neurotransmitter dopamine, and the pars reticulata. The progressive loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the pars compacta is the primary pathological hallmark of Parkinson disease, leading to its characteristic motor symptoms.
