1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000008
A neurotoxic compound that selectively destroys dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra region of the brain. Its toxicity is mediated by its metabolite, MPP+, which is formed by the enzyme monoamine oxidase B and inhibits complex I of the mitochondrial electron transport chain. Because it induces permanent symptoms of Parkinson disease in exposed individuals, it is used in animal models to study the disease's pathology and potential treatments.
