Opioid

Any psychoactive chemical that produces opiate-like effects by binding to opioid receptors in the central nervous system and other tissues. This broad class includes natural opiates derived from the opium poppy, synthetic compounds, and endogenous peptides like endorphins. Opioids are primarily used for pain relief but also have effects on mood, respiration, and gastrointestinal motility.
