Antidote
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012874
A therapeutic substance that counteracts the toxic effects of a specified xenobiotic. Antidotes function through several mechanisms, such as preventing the absorption of the poison, binding and inactivating the poison, or counteracting its effects at the receptor or metabolic level. For example, naloxone is an antidote for opioid overdose that acts as a competitive antagonist at opioid receptors, while atropine is used for organophosphate poisoning.
