Protamine

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009563

A small, arginine-rich protein that replaces histones late in spermatogenesis, condensing the DNA in the sperm head into a highly compact and stable structure. This compaction protects the paternal genome from damage during its journey to the egg. Protamine sulfate is used clinically as an antidote to heparin overdose.
