Proteasome
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009565
A large, multi-subunit protein complex found in the cytoplasm and nucleus of all eukaryotic cells that degrades unneeded or damaged proteins by proteolysis. Proteins are targeted for destruction by the proteasome after being tagged with a small protein called ubiquitin. This process breaks the target protein into small peptides of about seven to eight amino acids in length.
