Ubiquitin

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013677

A small, highly conserved regulatory protein found in eukaryotic cells that tags other proteins for degradation. This tagging process, known as ubiquitination, involves the covalent attachment of one or more ubiquitin molecules to a target protein. Ubiquitinated proteins are then recognized and degraded by the proteasome, a large protein complex.
