Mitophagy
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013294
The selective degradation of mitochondria through the process of autophagy, a cellular quality control mechanism. This process removes damaged or dysfunctional mitochondria to maintain cellular health and prevent the accumulation of reactive oxygen species. Mitophagy is initiated by the accumulation of proteins like PINK1 on the outer mitochondrial membrane, which then recruits the E3 ubiquitin ligase Parkin to tag the organelle for engulfment by an autophagosome.
