Mitochondrial membrane potential
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007416
The electrical potential difference across the inner mitochondrial membrane, generated by the pumping of protons from the mitochondrial matrix to the intermembrane space during cellular respiration. This electrochemical gradient stores energy, which is then used by ATP synthase to produce adenosine triphosphate. A disruption in this potential can indicate cellular stress or damage, often preceding apoptosis.
