Crista
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002674
An inward projection of the inner mitochondrial membrane that forms a series of shelf-like or finger-like structures within the mitochondrion. These folds greatly expand the surface area available for the processes of cellular respiration, specifically for the protein complexes of the electron transport chain and ATP synthase. The morphology of cristae, which can be lamellar, tubular, or vesicular, varies between cell types and is related to the metabolic state of the cell.
