Protein machine
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009582
A large, multi-protein complex in which the constituent proteins work together in a coordinated manner to carry out a complex biological function. These assemblies often undergo conformational changes driven by energy sources like ATP hydrolysis, allowing them to perform mechanical-like tasks such as synthesis, degradation, or transport. The ribosome, which synthesizes proteins, and ATP synthase, which generates ATP, are classic examples of protein machines.
