Ion pumps
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006093
Proteins embedded within a biological membrane that actively transport ions against their electrochemical gradient. This process, known as active transport, requires an external energy source, which is typically supplied by the hydrolysis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Ion pumps maintain specific ion concentrations inside and outside the cell, establishing membrane potential.
