P-glycoprotein

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008703

A membrane-bound transport protein that actively pumps a wide variety of substances out of cells, a process driven by the hydrolysis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This efflux pump is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily and is found in the cell membranes of many tissues, including the intestine, liver, kidneys, and brain capillaries. Overexpression of P-glycoprotein in cancer cells is a primary mechanism of multidrug resistance, as it expels chemotherapeutic agents from the cell.
