Peyer’s patch

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008702

An organized aggregate of lymphoid follicles found in the wall of the small intestine, particularly the ileum. As a component of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue, these patches monitor the intestinal lumen for pathogens and food antigens to initiate an appropriate immune response. They are covered by a specialized follicle-associated epithelium containing microfold (M) cells, which transport antigens from the gut lumen to the underlying lymphocytes and antigen-presenting cells.
