Microfold cell
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007330
An epithelial cell of the follicle-associated epithelium that overlies Peyer's patches and other mucosal lymphoid tissue, easily recognized by the short microfolds on its luminal surface. It takes up antigens and particles from the gut lumen and carries them across the cell in vesicles to macrophages, dendritic cells and lymphocytes held in a pocket on its basal side, which starts an immune response. The abbreviation M cell comes from microfold.
