Pexophagy
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008701
The selective degradation of peroxisomes by the cellular process of autophagy. This quality control mechanism involves the engulfment of old, damaged, or superfluous peroxisomes by a double-membraned vesicle called an autophagosome. The autophagosome then fuses with a lysosome, where the peroxisomal contents are broken down and recycled by hydrolytic enzymes.
