Macroautophagy
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006860
A cellular process involving the formation of a double-membraned vesicle, called an autophagosome, which engulfs cytoplasmic components, including damaged organelles and protein aggregates. This autophagosome then fuses with a lysosome, leading to the degradation of its contents and the recycling of molecular building blocks. It is a major pathway for cellular self-digestion and quality control.
