Petroleum pitch

A viscous, dark, amorphous residue obtained from the distillation or thermal treatment of petroleum. It is rich in aromatic hydrocarbons and contains a complex mixture of high molecular weight compounds. This material serves as a binder in carbon products and as a precursor for carbon fibers.
